John Steinbeck wrote “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that it isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone”. That’s true!
Its unique mix of seascapes, colors and art has fascinated so many artists that many decided to do of Positano the setting of popular movies like “Under the Toscan sun”.
You’ ll have a first sight of the town from the terrace of the high cliff from where Positano looks like a shell surrounded by a cascade of colored houses perched on the cliff.
Like a nativity scene Positano is a vertical town where the roads are replaced by uncountless steep flights of steps.
Arrived at the village you’ll be captured by its natural beauty, you’ll experience the atmosphere of a romantic place overlooking the blue water and the bright colors of the bougainvilleas and of the old fisherman houses will catch your emotions.
You’ll have time to stroll through the infinity of little shops selling the typical dresses of Positano or the handmade sandals or the famous Limoncello. This is the paradise for shoppers!
According to locals the origins of Positano are wrapped in the legend: the stolen painting of a black virgin was being transported by pirates across the Mediterranean. A terrible storm had blown up in the waters opposite Positano and the frightened sailors heard a voice saying “Posa!, Posa!” "Set me down!, Set me down!" The precious painting was unloaded and carried to the fishing village and the storm abated. The locals built a church where the icon washed ashore and you can still see that painting on the altar of the Church dell’Assunta.
History gives a Roman origin to the town and some roman ruins can be still see in the area of the Church.
Positano has had risen and fallen fortunes in the past but now it is the most beautiful and romantic place of the Amalfi Coast.
You’ll defiantly fall in love with this place!
